UP Government Allows FPOs to Buy Wheat Direct from Farmers | Lucknow News

LUCKNOW: Even as some farmer leaders are on the path to unrest and claim that the mandis and the MSP are under threat, the UP government Tuesday also roped into agricultural producers’ organizations (FPO) to speed up the state’s wheat supply.
The Food and Civilian Supplies Department issued an order stating that FPOs would be allowed to source wheat after proper approval from Mandi Samiti in the district.
FPOs will be able to purchase 60 quintals of wheat from Farmers, he read.
FPOs have been divided into two categories. Category 1 FPOs must be registered with the state government for one year and have working capital of Rs 10 lakh. These FPOs will be entitled to buy wheat members or farmers who become shareholders before March 1.
Category 2 FPOs must have working capital of Rs 50 lakh to purchase wheat from non-members as well. DMs have been asked to ensure that FPOs do not default on their payments.
The UP has around 585 FPOs, which will speed up the supply of wheat since there are already 6,000 public purchasing centers.
Speaking to TOI, Additional Chief Agriculture Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi said that farmers, who are members of FPOs, can directly purchase the crop from other farmers. “This movement directly involves farmers and therefore there will be no middlemen,” he said.
ACS said the change also relieves the state government from providing capital for the purchase of crops, since it must take out a loan from banks for this purpose. In the case of FPOs, farmers invest their own capital and work efficiently, Chaturvedi said.
The development comes a fortnight after CM Yogi Adityanath launched the UP FPO Shakti portal as part of the Kisan Kalyan mission. The portal developed by the Department of Agriculture with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation aims to benefit farmers by linking them directly to traders, agriculture and allied departments.
In fact, the government has sought to set up FPOs in 822 community development blocks with the aim of increasing farmers’ incomes and reviving the agricultural sector.
