Republic of Ghana signs visa waiver agreement with Qatar – Doha News

In March 2018, the Qatari Ambassador was posted to Ghana, with the opening of the Ghanaian Embassy in Doha taking place in May of the same year.

The Ghanaian government has signed a visa waiver agreement with eight countries, including Qatar. This is done with the aim of improving service delivery with respect to the passport administrations in Ghana and its overseas missions.

The other seven countries on the visa waiver list are Jamaica, Suriname, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Guyana, Venezuela and Malta.

The new agreement also provides that holders of special passports such as diplomatic, service and official passports will be exempted from applying for a visa on entry to Ghana and vice versa.

Under the agreement, initiatives include the procurement of power generators for the 13 passport application centers located in Ghana as well as the deployment of e-visa application hardware to the country’s embassies abroad. and the Ghana Immigration Service.

Recent efforts in the face of escalations in Ukraine

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Kwaku Ampratwum-Sarpong noted that Ghana has released $2 million for the evacuation of Ghanaian students from Ukraine amid the violent escalations, according to local media .

The report adds that of the 24 students who arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Friday, 16 of them arrived via Qatar Airways paid for by the Ghanaian government and eight of them used Turkish Airlines.

The government has reportedly arranged with five airlines, including Qatar Airways, Turkey, Ethiopia, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Lufthansa Airlines, to repatriate Ghanaian nationals from various neighboring countries around Ukraine.

Qatar-Ghana relations

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were first established in 1981 through “non-resident representation”, according to reports.

Some of the important agreements signed between the two countries include an agreement on the prevention of double taxation and the prevention of financial evasion signed in 2007 and an agreement on the establishment of a trade and investment committee between Qatar and Ghana in 2004, according to the report. .
