Minister emphasizes regional integration

ISLAMABAD:

Regional integration is fundamental for strengthening socio-economic relations with neighboring countries and it can lead to substantial economic gains with Central Asia, Russia and China, said Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Omar Ayub Khan.

Presiding Thursday a high-level meeting to discuss the agenda of the next meeting of the Pakistan-Russia Intergovernmental Commission (IGC), the minister focused on deepening bilateral relations with Russia.

“The two countries have modest potential for mutual cooperation in various fields,” he said.

He said the private sector could play an important role in improving bilateral relations, especially trade and investment ties.

He expressed hope for a constructive and positive dialogue between the two sides at the next IGC meeting on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation.

The Minister also asked the concerned participants to identify the priorities and prepare comprehensive proposals including the scope, action plan, results and outcomes as well as timelines.

On this occasion, the participants deliberated on various cooperation proposals with Russia in the fields of trade, customs and energy.
