Ruben Dias, Portuguese defender of defending champion Manchester City, has been named Premier League player of the season.
“Dias played a pivotal role in Man City’s third Premier League title in four years as it had an immediate impact following his departure from Benfica in September 2020,” the Premier League said in a statement on Saturday.
“The 24-year-old fitted in perfectly with Pep Guardiola’s squad and emerged as a leader at the back as City secured a 15-game winning streak, the fourth longest such race in the Premier League history, âhe added.
The Portuguese defender scored one goal in 32 games as he helped City win the EFL Cup – the English Football League – and reach the UEFA Champions League final.
Dias beat seven other nominees for the award, including De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, Jack Grealish, Harry Kane, Mason Mount, Mohamed Salah and Tomas Soucek.
The Hublot Young Player of the Season 2020/21 award went to City’s Phil Foden.
“The Man City midfielder was voted the best player aged 23 or under at the start of 2020/21,” the Premier League said.
The 21-year-old has produced nine goals and five assists in 28 games.
Foden is the fourth Blue Skies season 2020/21 award winner.
Dias and Guardiola were named Player of the Season and Manager of the Season respectively, while Liam Delap was named PL2 Player of the Season.
