Lion Links: 08/06/21 – The land of manes

How are you, Mane Landers? I feel like I can finally catch my breath after all the football so far this summer. This weekend I’ll be dragged to the beach by friends and it should be a good time to read. Hope you haven’t had a hard working week in the past few days and you can relax a bit this weekend as well. Let’s start this Friday with some links from the world of football.

Nani named to MLS Team of the Week

Nani of Orlando City was benched for MLS Team of the Week after midweek games across the league. The Lions captain secured an assist late in the first half of Orlando’s 1-1 draw against Inter Miami. It was Nani’s sixth assist of the season, placing him third in the league and just one behind his Orlando teammate Mauricio Pereyra. The two follow Carles Gil, who has collected 15 assists this year and is currently out due to injury. Nani has been in great shape for the Lions lately, scoring two goals and three assists in his last four appearances.

Pereyra has also done well for the Lions recently after a slow start to the season and showed his abilities in Orlando’s midweek result. Suspensions and injuries have limited Pereyra’s impact this year, but it has weighed on how he regains his rhythm in the offense.

“In my case, I think the most important thing is to be in good physical health and in good condition,” said Pereyra. “Because after that gives you more confidence when you can run when, when you are not being held and when you are 100% healthy, then of course you have to show your skills. mistakes and you may have answers, but the most important thing for the team is to have all the players in good shape and in good condition and that’s what we’re working on now.

MLS clubs were busy for transfer deadline day

While the Lions haven’t made much noise, it has been an eventful day for clubs in MLS as the summer transfer window draws to a close. LA Galaxy have officially signed Serbian striker Dejan Joveljić from Bundesliga Eintracht Frankfurt until 2025. The 21-year-old has scored 20 goals in 46 appearances while on loan with Wolfsberger AC in Austria. I’m personally glad he’s in the Western Conference. In fact, many teams in the west landed players on deadline day as the Seattle Sounders added Brazilian forward Leo Chu from Gremio, Sporting Kansas City signed a deal with the former midfielder. AC Milan field player Jose Muari until 2022 and the Vancouver Whitecaps are 19 years old. Ecuadorian midfielder Pedro Vite has a contract until 2025.

On the departures side, two young Americans are heading for Europe. SKC’s Gianluca Busio is officially heading to Serie A Venezia FC while Colorado Rapids left-back Sam Vines will join Royal Antwerp in Belgium. The New England Revolution have accepted a tentative deal with Club Brugge of Belgium for Tajon Buchanan, but the deal is not finalized. The Chicago Fire sold Przemyslaw Frankowski to RC Lens of the French Ligue 1 for around $ 3 million.

Some trades were also made as Jeremy Ebobisse was officially traded from the Portland Timbers to the San Jose earthquakes, while FC Cincinnati nabbed New York Red Bulls midfielder Florian Valot in exchange for a initial amount of $ 50,000 in general allowance money. This amount could double if Valot achieves certain performance metrics.

USWNT wins first bronze medal

The United States Women’s National Team will leave Tokyo with a bronze medal after beating Australia 4-3. This game was a stark contrast to the scoreless draw the two countries shared in the group stage. For the second time in her career, Megan Rapinoe scored an Olimpico at the Olympics. She folded a corner into the goal in the eighth minute to start the scoring, then scored on the volley in the 21st minute for an early brace. Carli Lloyd also had a brace and broke Abby Wambach’s record to become the USWNT’s top scorer at the Olympics with 10 goals. She chased a hat trick throughout the game but failed to find a third goal. Australians Sam Kerr, Caitlin Foord and Emily Gielnik all scored to keep the game competitive enough. Orlando Pride’s Alex Morgan came on in the 81st minute for Lloyd and had to come out due to an injury in the stoppage time. Morgan was happy that the USWNT was able to end their Olympic campaign with a victory.

As for the gold medal game between Canada and Sweden, it has been postponed until 8 a.m. this morning. Although not likely to play in this game, Pride goalkeeper Erin McLeod will win a medal as she was included in Canada’s roster for their victory over Chile in the group stage.

Lionel Messi to leave FC Barcelona

This is the saga that has dominated the football world for a while, but Messi’s time at Barcelona seems to be over. The La Liga giant has announced that a deal has been made between Messi and the club, but league regulations and financial problems have kept it from becoming a reality. Paris Saint-Germain are eager to step into the Argentine legend while Manchester City are likely out of the race after officially signing Jack Grealish for a hefty price tag. Only time will tell if Messi’s reign at Barcelona is officially over, but it could be another step towards him to eventually play in MLS further in his career.

  • Here is a good reminder on the next League Cup. It’s a knockout tournament and Orlando City will take on La Liga MX’s Santos Laguna at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Exploria Stadium.
  • Before this cup game, Orlando will hit the road for a game against Cincinnati tomorrow night at 7:30 p.m. and the Lions are already hard at work getting ready.
  • FIFA want Uruguay and kit sponsor Puma to remove two of the four stars from the team’s jersey. Two of the stars are there to reward Uruguay’s Olympic gold medals won in 1924 and 1928, then considered world championships.
  • We’ll end our ties with a Pride brisk walk competition. In case you didn’t know, the main rule that differentiates brisk walking from other runs is that one foot should always be in contact with the ground. The result is basically the kind of walk you take when someone is holding the door open for you even though you are far away.

That’s all for today. I wish you all a happy Friday and rest of your weekend. Go Orlando!
