Ghana steps up efforts to evacuate Ghanaian students
The Akufo-Addo-led government has started evacuating Ghanaian students stranded in war-torn Ukraine, an official statement said on Friday.
It comes after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, with missile strikes and explosions reported near major cities and on its military infrastructure.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said discussions with Swiss, Turkish, Moldovan, Polish, Hungarian, Romanian and Slovak authorities to assist in the smooth evacuation of Ghanaian students to Ukraine were well advanced.
“After the Ukrainian airspace was closed, it had become difficult to airlift our compatriots from Kyiv and other parts of the country. Therefore, the only viable means of evacuation is the land route to neighboring countries such as Moldova, Belarus, Slovakia and Hungary.
“The government has put in place the necessary package to facilitate transportation, accommodation, food, medical support, etc. to ease the burden on our compatriots,” the statement said.
“The ministry, through its missions in Bern, Switzerland, and the Honorary Consulate in Ukraine is in contact with Ghanaian students in Ukraine through its leadership. A list of students has been drawn up to facilitate the evacuation,” the statement said.
