Ex-Everton and Real Madrid star James Rodriguez wants Liverpool to win the Champions League

Former Real Madrid and Everton midfielder James Rodriguez hopes Liverpool can prevail in the Champions League final despite their links with their opponents.

Former Everton star James Rodriguez has revealed he wants Liverpool to beat former club Real Madrid in the Champions League final later this month.

Jurgen Klopp’s side booked their place in the final with a 5-2 aggregate win over Villarreal last week – their third final in five seasons. Meanwhile, Los Blancos came from behind to beat Manchester City 6-5 over two legs.

It’s the first time the two sides have met in the final since the infamous 2018 clash where Mohamed Salah was knocked out before half-time after facing Sergio Ramos. Gareth Bale turned out to be the winner of the game in this match, scoring an audacious kick in an otherwise remembered game for Loris Karius’ two glaring errors.

Ahead of the game in Paris, Rodriguez is hopeful Liverpool can get the job done due to his affiliation with Colombian team-mate Luis Diaz. He said: “I want Liverpool to be champions, I have a lot of friends at Real Madrid and they are a tough team for this type of game, but I want Lucho (Diaz) to win.”

This is also despite the fact that he previously played for Real Madrid and Liverpool rivals Everton. Rodriguez started his career in his native Colombia, before moving to Europe with Porto and Monaco.

After impressing at the 2014 World Cup, Rodriguez earned a big move to Real Madrid for a reported fee of around £63m. He had a great debut season at Los Blancos, scoring 17 goals in 47 appearances.

But the 30-year-old began to struggle with a succession of injuries which eventually reduced his minutes throughout the 2015/16 season. It was a similar theme throughout his time at the Santiago Bernabau.

Rodriguez then spent two years on loan at Bayern Munich, where he registered 15 goals and 20 assists in 67 games. He returned to Los Blancos for the start of 2019/10 but it turned out to be another frustrating campaign at Real as he only made 14 appearances in all competitions.

He decided to leave Real in the summer of 2020, joining Everton as Carlo Ancelotti began to rebuild his Blues squad. Although Rodriguez never played in front of a full Goodison Park due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he was a fan favorite due to the quality he brought to the club.

With six goals and nine assists in 27 appearances, Rodriguez helped Everton finish in the first half before deciding to leave this summer. He moved to Al-Rayyan for an undisclosed fee, where he has since scored four times in the Saudi Premier League.
