Connor Stanley landed a Manchester United loan exit this weekend.
The 19-year-old winger has signed for Atlanta United 2, MLS reserve team Atalanta United.
Atlanta United 2 plays in the USL Championship, the second level of American “football”.
Stanley was one of four players the club signed this weekend as they prepare for the season kickoff on April 23.
After the move was confirmed, Stanley posted on Instagram to say he was “so happy” to have the opportunity.
What was Stanley’s situation at United?
Connor Stanley’s contract with United will expire at the end of June. Men reported in February that the club were wondering if they would offer him a new contract.
It is highly likely that Stanley will be released when his contract expires and become free to find a new club as a free agent.
This loan move effectively gives him a head start, allowing him to play competitive football and showcase himself, while potentially landing an indefinite contract at Atlanta United.
A year ago, Stanley trained with United’s first team ahead of the club’s Europa League draw with Club Brugge. He was signed to Birmingham City academy in 2018 but has been a bit of an Under-23 player this season.
He has only played three Under-23 games, and only one in 2021.
It’s a good opportunity for the young winger to start his career away from United. Not everyone can be successful at Old Trafford, and now Stanley has a chance to look to the future.
