Big game day change for Derby County fans as Manchester United boss presents loan plans

Derby County are keen to see Manchester United defender Teden Mengi on loan for the next league campaign.

The 19-year-old was with the Rams in the second half of last season, and he impressed manager Wayne Rooney.

DerbyshireLive has been reporting since April that Rooney would like Mengi to be part of his squad, and a tentative deal with United is in place, but the Rams are still under a transfer embargo.

They can only sign free agents and players on loan. A new player under permanent contract cannot sign for more than a year, and loan signings cannot last more than half a season, but there is also the problem of embargoed clubs which have 23 players from “Professional level” who are not able to register players.

‘Professional ranking’ players are those who are deemed to have made an appearance in any senior club game, and with a number of Derby academy players having participated in the January FA Cup match against Chorley due to a coronavirus outbreak, they would be considered “Professional Reinforcement” players.

Advice to fans

County Derby has given fans some important advice ahead of the new season.

The club have informed supporters that from now on, on match days, Pride Park Stadium will function as a cashless stadium for the 2021/22 campaign.

Only credit / debit card and smartphone payment methods will be accepted as a method of payment through lobby refreshment kiosks, betting stations and reception facilities.

United team news

Manchester United players prepare for Sunday’s pre-season game against Derby County at Pride Park Stadium.

United players involved in the European Championships, including their England contingent, are not yet expected to report for the preseason.

Players who have been spotted at the club’s training ground in Carrington include Mason Greenwood, Alex Telles, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Dean Henderson, Axel Tuanzebe, Andreas Pereira and Tom Heaton, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Restored reruns

FA Cup reruns are expected to be introduced until the fourth round of the 2021/22 campaign.

Reruns of all rounds were removed last season due to the condensed game schedule caused by the pandemic.

The 2021/22 FA Cup schedule has been revealed, with the fourth round taking place a week later than usual due to an additional international break between January 24 and February 1.

The fifth round will take place in the middle of the week at the beginning of March.

Admission of the knight

Jason Knight says he’s refreshed and eager to go as Derby County prepares for the new Championship campaign.

The 20-year-old started all but five of the Rams’ 46 league games last season in the relegation battle.

The midfielder also broke into the Republic of Ireland squad and has played 80 times for Derby and scored nine goals since making his debut in the 2-1 win over Huddersfield Town two years ago.

Knight is with the team at their training camp in Surrey.
