Aviation Gin, the alcohol brand owned by actor Ryan Reynolds, pokes fun at Platoon Widely criticized the holiday ad on Friday with a little help from the same actress who appeared in the controversial ad.
In an Aviation Gin ad posted to Reynolds’ Twitter account, the actress is sitting in a bar with two friends in front of martini glasses. The friends console the actress, who raises a toast (“Towards new beginnings”) and begins to drink all her glass in one sip.
“The exercise bike is not included in #AviationGin,” Reynolds wrote alongside the ad. The ad itself is titled “The Gift That Does Not Give Back”. The name is also a riff on the Peloton commercial, which is called “The Gift That Gives Back”.
The actress in the Aviation Gin ad is the same as the one in the Peloton ad, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to FOX Business.
Peloton, a company known for its high-end exercise bikes, lost more than $ 1 billion this week as the market reacted to widespread criticism of its holiday advertising. In the Peloton commercial, the actress recounts a year of training after her husband bought her a Peloton bike for Christmas.
Critics ridiculed the ad as sexist, saying the husband in the ad pressured his wife to stay slim. Some social media users said the ad character looks scared and should consider getting a divorce.
Actor Sean Hunter, who played the husband in the Peloton commercial, told Psychology Today this week that he had encountered a wave of negative comments about the role. One person reportedly told him that the advertisement was a “symbol of patriarchy”.
“I’m currently sitting here hoping that I can continue to audition for spotless ads, and that if my students find the ad and recognize me, they won’t think of me any differently than they already know me,” Hunter said in the article.
